Frequently
Asked Questions
The following are common questions I receive
regarding my e-books. Please feel free to contact
me if you have any specific queries that are
not answered here.
'The
Wealthy Writer' and 'The Enterprising
Writer'
What's the difference between 'The
Enterprising Writer' and 'The Wealthy Writer'?
Let me answer that by giving you a brief
history.
I conceived the first book, 'The Enterprising
Writer', in 2000 and self-published it as an e-book
in January 2001. Within a matter of weeks, the
e-book gained a strong international following and
attracted praise from the media, best-selling
authors and industry commentators. It also
attracted the attention of print publishers.
'The Enterprising Writer', published in
Australia in 2003, offered more detailed
information for commercial, freelance writing. 'The
Wealthy Writer', published in the US in 2004, built
on this foundation, with new chapters and new
techniques, tools and tips for literary success.
Both books are available in bookstores.
Since then, I have produced a special e-book
edition which completes the process.
It combines the printed texts of 'The Wealthy
Writer' and 'The Enterprising Writer', and also
offers bonus material, including:
- New case studies and writing samples
- More business forms and templates
- New information not available in either of
the print editions
And, because it's an e-book, I have included
interactive links to each section. Simply click on
any line in the Contents to be transported to a
specific chapter or sub-heading. It also includes
hyperlinks to sites on the Internet.
Who is The Wealthy Writer?
The Wealthy Writer, as I explain in my books, is
anyone who wishes to pursue a profitable career as
a writer. I say profitable, because the vast
majority of writers struggle, year after year, to
earn a living or merely survive. Sadly, most never
realize the dream of generating a sustainable
income from their craft.
Put simply, a Wealthy Writer is an enterprising
writer who maximizes opportunities, who knows how
to run their business and how to market
themselves.
'The Wealthy Writer' manual shows you in a
simple, step-by-step fashion how to establish your
business, manage it as well as how to identify and
capitalize on the latest and greatest writing
markets available offline and online.
There are a lot of how-to books available for
writers. What's different about yours?
Yes, there are many good books on how to write.
That's why I haven't added to the list.
'The Wealthy Writer' will not show you the
basics of writing. I'm assuming that if you're
interested in this book, you already have some
literary skills and talent. If not, you can read
any number of books that can help you develop these
abilities.
What sets 'The Wealthy Writer' apart from other
manuals is that it focuses on the most lucrative
area for writers today &endash; commercial
writing.
That is writing for businesses &endash; both
small and large, private and public &endash;
producing everything from sales letters, brochures
and newsletters to advertisements, media releases
and speeches.
I've dedicated a sizeable section of my book to
the hottest markets in this field. I show you how
to target, capture and service clients in these
niche markets. I also share insider techniques that
help you customize your skills to suit their
needs.
Commercial writing is fun, exciting and
extremely lucrative. It has given me a healthy
income over the past 10 years in my own business,
and several years before that, working in the
industry.
I've been a professional writer for a number
of years, and I'm yet to make a decent living.
Isn't the competition too great?
No. Corporate communications is a growing
industry, and it's also a relatively untapped one
for freelance writers. Keep in mind that every
message you read or hear &endash; whether it's
news, advertising or even product packaging
&endash; has a writer behind it.
And, with more than six billion consumers on the
planet, each thirsting for information and advice
&endash; there's plenty of continued growth and
opportunities for enterprising writers.
Having said that, this business is like any
other business. It's competitive. You have to be a
good writer. But, just as importantly, you have to
be a good business person to succeed long-term. In
some ways this is more crucial than having the
literary skill. And, sadly, it's the area most
neglected by writers &endash; and the reason most
fail to make it.
What's the best thing about being a Wealthy
Writer?
For me, I can sum it up in one word.
Freedom.
There's no greater pleasure than working for
yourself, especially if you enjoy what you do for a
living.
I have had the pleasure of working for myself
since 1991. Running my own business means I can
work when I like, how I like and as often as I
like.
I'm not saying it's an easy road, but it's the
only way I know to have financial and personal
freedom. And, by focusing on the lucrative world of
commercial writing, I have been able to take time
off to work on other projects, develop a different
business and relax at home while others toil at an
office.
Writers
on Writing
What makes 'Writers on Writing' different
from other books of literary quotations?
Each of the 360 quotes has been assembled into
specific chapters relating to issues affecting all
writers, such as technique, creativity, writer's
block and so on.
I am not aware of other books that have
categorized quotes this way.
But what separates 'Writers on Writing' from the
rest is the inclusion of more than 150 positive
affirmations written by me for other writers.
These affirmations have been included in each
chapter and complement the quotations.
What's the value of affirmations to writers?
Put simply, affirmations are positive
statements, such as "I am a great writer". But
there's nothing simple about the effects of
affirmations.
Recited daily, they have the ability to
transform your thinking and, consequently, your
actions.
I personally recite affirmations every day, and
I have found that they have helped me as a writer.
They help me get a good start on the day and
improve the quality of my work.
It's all about 'programming' the mind. We are
all subjected to negativity, from the daily news to
the way we interact with other people. So it's
important to balance that by feeding the mind with
positive statements.
This, I believe, is vital for professional
writers who face the challenge of being creative
every day.
These affirmations address the specific needs of
writers today.
What's the best way to use affirmations?
There are a number of ways you can use them in
your life.
The easy approach is to select a few from the
book and say each of them several times (I suggest
at least a dozen times) and say them with
conviction.
The best approach I have found is to say the
affirmations while you hold a mental image.
Let's say your affirmation is "I am a great
writer". As you recite this with meaning, picture
in your mind yourself working at your desk on an
imporant piece of writing.
See yourself writing continuously.
Feel yourself enjoying the process with
no inhibitions.
Revel in the sense of satisfaction in
completing your work.
Enjoy the feeling of having it accepted
by an editor and praised by readers.
Yes, I know this is all in your imagination. But
it doesn't have to stay there. If you continue to
use affirmations daily, you will begin to see
changes in your life because you are changing your
thinking.
This is not a magic wand.
You still have to apply yourself to your work,
but you should find the going easier. You should
start to see a freeing of the creative process, as
you release negative ideas about yourself and your
abilities.
All I can say is that I have used techniques
like affirmations and meditation (we've touched on
this with the above visualization exercises) for 15
years, and I have seen how they have enhanced my
life and my work as a writer.
